Asking permission
To get you to think more deeply than usual, I will need ask your explicit permission, to ensure you are engaged and interested in that moment. By checking for permission, the resistance to challenging conversation is reduced and it will be easier and faster to go deeper. Establish permission any time you need to think differently about a challenge.
This is a simple way to show that I respect you and your view of the world.
Placement
Once I have your permission to speak about a challenge, I will define with you where we are and what is about to happen next. In the dance of insight model, this is called Placement and it is required to anchor a conversaion. By letting you know where you are, where you have been and where you are going in the conversation. Placement is a pre-framing technique that allows me to be very specific about the subject of discussion to avoid the conversation going in circles. This happens especially when the conversation is emotionally charged, as it is easier to get lost in details or problems.
Questioning
Once I have your permission and the coaching conversation is framed, we are now in a space to help you think more deeply. The best way to do this is through powerful questions. Questioning is a critical leadership skill. Why avoid advise?
We offer advice that is based on our own experiences (knowledge/studies, theories, models….) which are different to other people’s.
We might know one answer to their challenge, but it may not be the best answer for them.
We want to encourage people to think for themselves
Clarifying
When I clarify I get to the bottom line in a conversation by getting to the essence of what you said in a few words, which should leave you feeling better about your challenge.
Clarifying requires me to listen intently for patterns rather than detail:
what you are saying
What you are not saying
What is behind your words
What you are saying that you cannot hear yourself
When I clarify, I take a risk because I have to trust my instinct. When this is done well,it will help you visualize the challenge, confirm it or re-define it.
